Sort Welds
Note
With the release of Verbotics 2025, weld sorting has been revised and undergone significant changes. If you are using a previous version of weld, you will need to swap to a documentation version prior to 1.0 using the drop down menu in the bottom left.
Weld sorting allows welds to be reordered in the welds list, the order that welds appear in this list (when not filtered out) is the order that welds will be planned and exported. Note that welds can be dragged around manually.
Only selected welds will be sorted. To sort all welds, select all welds prior to clicking the sort button.
Sort Priority
Sorting methods are applied
allows you to apply sorting methods to welds row by row. Verbotics will prioritise sorts based on their order in the table.
This order can be changed by selecting a sort in the table, the shifting its position using the and
buttons.

Sort Welds Dialogue
Note
Secondary sorts and onwards will only apply if there are welds that can be rearranged without disrupting the priority of the previous sort. For example welds sorted by x-position may have several welds sharing the same x-position, only these welds will be affected by secondary sorts.
Sorting Methods
There are currently 10 standard sorting methods to select from:
Position along axis
Welds will be sorted by their position, relative to the workpiece origin. For example; X will sort welds in order of their position along the X-axis.
Additionally, the direction of this sort (Low to high or High to low) can be selected.
Robot Positioner and Workpiece positioner value
These 2 methods sort welds based on either the workpiece positioner or robot positioner value when being welded. Only works for previously planned welds. Useful to minimise the amount of positioner movement, or to complete key welds to hold larger parts together prior to positioner movement.
Welds can be sorted this way based on all positioner joints, or by just a specific positioner.
Additionally, the direction of this sort (Low to high or High to low) can be selected.
Weld Name
Welds are sorted by their name alphabetically. This order can be set to either Ascending or Descending.
Tool Name
Welds are sorted by the name of their assigned tool alphabetically. This order can be set to either Ascending or Descending.
Spiral
Welds will be sorted from their furthest to closest position of each weld compared to the average position of all welds being sorted.
This direction of this sort can be chosen by selecting either Outwards (closest to furthest from average) or Inwards (furthest to closest from average).
Closest to Next
Sorts welds such that each subsequent weld will the closest unsorted weld from the last sorted weld.
Furthest to Next
Sorts welds such that each subsequent weld will the furthest unsorted weld from the last sorted weld.
Group touching welds
Groups welds together that have starts and or ends less than 2mm for one another. Useful for grouping welds together in small box sections for example.
Interleave weld passes
Only applies to multi-pass welds. Instead of performing each pass of a multipass welds sequentially, sorts welds such that each multipass has one pass completed at a time. E.g. Instead of completing multipass A as A1 > A2 > A3
before moving onto multipass B. I The passes are instead alternated such that the order is: A1 > B1 > A2 > B2 > A3 > B3
.
Alternate Welds Across Plane
In addition to sorting welds, programs can alternate between groups of welds on opposite sides of a specified plane
Alternative can improve the usefulness of some sorting actions by alternating the sorted welds by their relative closeness on either side of a mirror plane. This enables heat to be shared across a symmetrical workpiece for example.
Plane Normal: The normal direction of the plane. For example; if X is set to 1, welds will be alternated across a YZ plane.
Plane Distance: The distance to offset the plane, relative to the workpiece origin. This setting also includes a function to calculate and position the plane at the middle of the workpiece.
Alternate every: Number of welds to sort on one side of the mirror plane before alternating to the other side.
Preview Order of Sorted Welds
After sorting methods have been selected in the dialogue, clicking on the 3D viewer (without closing the sort welds dialogue) will enable a visualisation of the new order welds are to be completed in. The scale shown in the sort welds menu indicates where welds are positioned in the sorted order.
